Q: Does altTokyo hire or place people in positions?
A: No, we do no placement whatsoever. The jobboard is just a free service for the altTokyo community of Japanophiles. We make no claim or directly recommend a particular job poster to an employer or are involved in any hiring, placements or interviewing process. Your resume sells itself.

Q: I do not speak Japanese or have any kind of Visa, can I find employment in Japan?
A: Extremely difficult (but not impossible), as in most cases in order to work full time in Japan you need to have a University degree and you also require the backing of a company in Japan to sponsor your visa. You would really need a unique skill for a company to go to all this trouble and expense to take a chance on you. You may not need much Japanese language ability to teach English but language ability is always desirable and assists your chances of placement.

Q: I submitted my resume on altTokyo, why has it not been approved or is declined?
A: Please understand while keenness and ambition to work in Japan is commendable we want to keep the candidate posters section of altTokyo as interesting (& realistically hireable) for employers, head-hunters and employment agencies as much as possible. We regret we cannot publish everybody who submits a resume.

Q: Do I have to be in Japan to apply to an employer?
A: If you seem to have the right skillset realistically you would need to be in Japan for interviewing and also for your own benefit to check out the organisation and conditions. Candidates with the correct visa always have the advantage and freely interview in Japan.

    Q: Can I work short-term on a holiday visa?
A: Don’t even consider it! It is illegal to work in Japan on a tourist Visa and if caught you will be deported and blacklisted. Please check the Ministry of Foreign affairs website (MOFA) for more information on Visas.
