I think many questions on units, types of radiation can be found here. Worth reading if you have the time.

On the topic of monitoring radiation, I think it is important we find data collecting sources so we can make our own judgments and not depend on the media is obfuscating the reality. Also, the direction of the winds matter matter and http://www.weather-report.jp/com/home/kishomap/fusoku/japan.html may be a useful guide. Lastly, I found following link http://www.radiationnetwork.com/index.htm to be informative. It is worth checking out. May add more links later.

Glyn, ref Black rain was talking about the Yakuza/Michael Douglas cop movie and the famous quote about Black rain, refering to sticky black rain that was radioactive fallout, or radioactive rain. Thank goodness nothing like that will eventuate. We were lucky, this could have gone alot worse.

Looks like radiation detected in the tap water near Fukushima, also cows milk and spinach. Those farmers not affected will now be hard pressed selling their produce. Produce from that area will have no demand even if they are clear of radiation.

Iodine 131 apparently detected in Ibaraki.

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704021504576209854015156320.html

Raising concerns over possible contamination from the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, Japan’s health ministry said Saturday that an abnormal amount of a radioactive material was detected in spinach grown about 110 kilometers (about 70 miles) northeast of Tokyo.
The ministry also said that an abnormal amount of the material, called iodine-131, was detected in milk from a dairy farm about 50 kilometers away from the plant.

    Also exported broadbeans.

    http://focustaiwan.tw/ShowNews/WebNews_Detail.aspx?Type=aECO&ID=201103200011

A batch of broad beans imported from Japan was found to be contaminated with radiation, broad beans, which where produced in Kagoshima in southern Japan, was probably exposed to radiation while being transported to Narita Airport in Tokyo,

    Hi.
Is it possible to keep some sort of viewable tracking of the data, maybe once every 30-60 minutes instead than every one, that can be consulted freely?
Because it is unlikely that people will notice not-spiky rises in the values this way, and also they will miss peaks if they are not at pc, and also it would be nice to compare your data with the official ones.
Also, I read Ed’s post about an email alert, which I would like to subscribe to if possible.

    @Ed,Admin,all the other data collectors:
If you can email me your datasets, I might be able to standardize them all under a single measurement units and graph them together with their locations for comparison, if you are interested.

I am watching the Sendai wind direction at this site:

    http://www.wunderground.com/global/stations/47590.html

Shows a wind arrow so it’s quite clear.

I have updated the graph link that showed what we detected on the 15th/16th March, (radiation page, left side). I animated graphs across the 24 hours.
