Following Katsushika Ward’s decision on August 18 to close sandboxes in 29 schools due to the radiation measuring 0.25uSv/h~0.57uSv/h, Chiyoda Ward also found highly contaminated spots in two schools and Suginami citizens’ group reported on September 2 to the Suginami Mayor radiation levels of the highly contaminated area in Koenji.

Chiyoda Ward found in August a sandbox in two schools at 0.25uSv/h~0.36uSv/h and over 0.6uSv/h in one spot, exceeding the Chiyoda Ward’s own safety limit of 0.25uSv/h.

Two citizens’ groups, “Tokyo Kids & Radiation” and “Suginami Anshin Project”, measured 0.7uSv/h at the childrens’ centre (jidoukan), 1.08uSv/h at a park entrance, 1.27uSv/h on a school route, and found 21,760Bq/kg of cesium in the soil near the Koenji Central Park with a help of K. Shozugawa, a researcher at Tokyo University who did spectral analysis on the soil. According to their report to the Suginami Mayor, Katsushika Ward and Adachi Ward have set the benchmark at 0.25uSv/h, while Suginami Ward applies the food safety limit of 500Bq/kg to school grounds and sandboxes. The area the Suginami citizens’ group found are way above those safety standards, and the groups mentioned the need for further monitoring in a wider area and to start decontamination works as well as securing disposal sites for contaminated materials.
