Radioactive Housedust
December 19, 2011 in Uncategorized

Recently some startling results have been published from journalists checking housedust for radiation.
Worst result was a house in Ibaraki with a startling 6,264.74 Bq/kg! This info is from a Japanese blog here
(Data tranlated here).

Seeing such findings even in a house Setagaya 1,434.38 Bq/kg (close to Shibuya ward), a quick check of the vacuum cleaner here in Meguro was in order thinking nothing would be detected. Using a scintillator detector nothing was detected. Scintillator can only detect gamma radiation. Then tried the pancake geiger detector which is also sensitive to alpha and beta and a definate increase was detected. It wasn’t anything like the high readings posted in Ibaraki but still detectable readings about twice normal background levels 18-20 rads. To capture the rise the RM80 geiger used to display the background radiation on the altTokyo plot was placed on the vacuum dust collector for an hour and as seen in yesterdays plot the rise was captured. Incidently the carpets are cleaned weekly and the aircons have filters and of course no shoes in the house.
