School Bento tests
October 7, 2011 in Uncategorized
Quite a few expats parents have been quite concerned about the food at daycare and what exactly is being offered to their children. There have been notices sent home to parents about the origins of the vegetables being served. Recently notices have been sent home informing parents they will now allow home bentos to be accepted in lieu of inhouse daycare menus.
And now Shibuya ward has published in English their school grounds/food audit. Some sand pits have had their sand changed but the food testing seems very reassuring. As below;

From safecast JPN October 13 some interesting reading;
In October Yokohama city started selecting one school a day and testing all ingredients to be served in school lunch at that school. The test on October 12 detected 350Bq/kg of cesium in mushroom from that originated from either Kyushu, Shikoku island, or Shimane prefecture in western Japan. They quickly withdrew the information concerning the origin of the mushroom from their website, and this information with a statement saying the source (of the mushroom) is under investigation. The test was done on the day before the lunch and the mushroom in question was not served.
The original posting of the test results including the origin (source) of the mushroom: http://yokohama-konan.info/23.10.23.pdf
The revised posting where it says that the source is under investigation: http://www.city.yokohama.lg.jp/kyoiku/kyu-sokutei/20111012.html
